Our Weekend Getaway to KY

Labor day weekend, Richard and I decided to take a little trip by ourselves to KY.  We were suppose to go to Charleston, but the 10 hour drive kept haunting us.  Also the closer the trip got, the harder it was the think we would be away from Benjamin for a week.  The first time away, so we decided to make it a long weekend.  We dropped the little guy off with my parents on Friday evening and headed north.  We stopped in Elizabethtown first for dinner and spent the night.  I have always wanted to go there since the movie with Orlando Bloom.  Cute town, but not what I expected.  Saturday morning we headed out for the Louisville Zoo.  It was a blazing 104 degrees that day.  Not a good day for the zoo.  Thank goodness we got in free with my Nashville zoo membership so we only stayed for a little bit just to say we had gone.  We found an amazing hotel downtown Louisville.  We stayed at the Seelbach Hilton.  Fancy, fancy!  We took some naps and went to walk downtown towards the riverboat we were going to have dinner on and cruise that night.  The dinner cruise was really nice.  Lots of southern fried food, but it was beautiful to see downtown Louisville at night.
Sunday morning we walked downtown to go see the largest Louisville slugger bat.  It was really big, over 5 stories tall!  Then we headed to find Churchill Downs.  I am determined I will go to the Kentucky Derby some day!  Later on we headed to the Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill (close to Lexington).  We got to see a little bit right before the big downpour so we ran around in the pouring rain to see more.  We were soaked, but it was fun!  We ate dinner at Eddie Montgomery's steakhouse (of Montgomery Gentry).  Beautiful building, but pretty pricey for the food we got.  We stayed at a beautiful B&B in Bardstown, KY on Sunday night.  It was our first experience at a B&B.  The little old lady there had been all over the world and talked and talked and talked about all of her souvenirs around the house.  Needless to say we didn't here much about the 105 year old house.  Monday morning we headed out to find Abraham Lincoln's birthplace.  That's right, Lincoln was born in KY!  We found the National Park and the log cabin he was born in was being "stored" in a memorial building as you can see below.  After that, we headed to get our baby boy!  It was a much needed getaway for the two of us, but we really missed Benjamin a lot!
